Burg Forchtenstein castle

Burg Forchtenstein castle, sitting on a dolomite rock, is one of the oldest cultural landmarks of the Rosalia region.

skip Built already in the 13th century, it was acquired by the Esterhazy family in 1622. Especially interesting are the various collections: the armour collection, a weapon's collection from the 16th to the 19th century with pieces of the Turkish siege, 72 historic flags, the family portraits and the 142m deep castle well.

For little guests we have culture and science with hands-on experience: on weekends in July (always on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am - 6pm) the halls of Burg Forchtenstein are filled with children's laughter when Forfel, the castle mouse, enables all kids to spend a day like in the Middle Ages.

The churches of the region tell of the riding troups from the East. The gothic church in Mattersburg with its baroque interior fittings is one of the most prominent sacral buildings of the Middle Ages in the Burgenland. Many a legends deal with the many wayside shrines of the region. They were built by mostly common people to remember exceptionial events or loved ones.

Tradition & Customs

skip Many small local festivities like the "Robischkirtag" in Marz or the "Ananaskirtag" in Wiesen are still very popular here and visited by our guests as well. The 2nd Sunday in October is a must for all lovers of sweets. Starting at 10am you can taste the wonderful chestnut strudel, try roasted chestnuts, chestnut honey and much more.

A variety of theater performances, concerts and exhibition of contemporary artists offers the Kulturzentrum Mattersburg and the galleries of the region.

International stars

skip are on stage the Wiesen Festival. The music festivals - the jazz fest, Forestglade festival or Sunsplash draw a great crowd every year. Here they listen to different kinds of music while enjoying Woodstock atmosphere.
