The museum was installed in 1971 and sponsored by Anna Freud, Sigmund´s youngest daughter. Original furniture, the authentic doctor´s waiting room, a selection of antique-style pieces, autographs and first editions of his masterpieces are on display. Plus plenty of information about the origins of the world-famous psychoanalysis.
During the last decade, the museum was refurbished and enlarged. The addition of a new library was followed by a museum shop, a book storage unit and a modern lecture and exhibition hall in the newly integrated private apartment of the Freud family. Today, Berggasse 19 hosts a truly ultimate exhibition of Freud´s methods of psychoanalysis, its historical importance and the relationship between medicine and art.
Among the highlights are the alternating special exhibitions at the Sigmund Freud Museum, the large library, a museum shop, lectures and presentations in German, a new exhibition and event area, "Foundation of Arts, Sigmund Freud Museum Vienna" a collection of contemporary art (since 1997). Plus the new project "A view from outside" featuring installations of internationally renowned artists.
