A WARM WELCOME to WEISSENKIRCHEN
the origin of the Riesling grape variety

Surrounded by sunny wine hills and squeezed in between the silver ribbon of the Danube river and the surrounding green forests, the mighty gothic church of Weißenkirchen rises up. With the wine growers´ villages of Joching, Wösendorf and St. Michael, Weißenkirchen forms the centre of the wine growing region Wachau. Our village is the origin of the Riesling grape variety.

The cultural centre is the Teisenhoferhof in Weißenkirchen.
The inhabitants of this unique river landscape saw the Nibelungen pass through to the faraway land of the Huns, resisted the attacks of the "Awaren" and experienced a first economic heyday during Christianisation by Bavarian monks. Still today, farms of the Passau diocese, the Freising, Tegernsee and Niederaltaich monasteries are still witnesses to this attachment to Southern Germany.

The 1500 inhabitants mainly live on viticulture. A landscape formed by the harmony of culture and nature, lived poetry between man and his surroundings. Panoramic path in the vineyard Achleiten.

Romantic town hall with registry office:

"Ausgsteckt" - our "Heurigen" wine taverns and their opening times can be found looking up the section "Dining".
